COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will focus on the etiology, assessment, and treatment of anorexia and bulimia nervosa. It will review new concepts regarding factors contributing to a vulnerability for developing anorexia nervosa. It will discuss standardized methods of assessment of anorexia and bulimia nervosa core symptoms, as well as common comorbid symptoms, such depression, anxiety, and OCD. It will review course and outcome, medical management, and nutritional needs. We will discuss psychological treatments and medication, as well as levels of care, and discriminating between new types of interventions and evidence based treatment.



PRESENTER BIO
Dr. Walter H. Kaye, M.D.
Walter H. Kaye, M.D. is a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and is Research Director of the Eating Disorder Program. He is also Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California San Diego. Dr. Kaye attended Ohio State Medical School, trained in neurology at the University of Southern California, and trained in psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Kaye was then a fellow and research physician at the National Institute of Mental Health for 7 years where he conducted research on appetite regulation, behavior, and treatment for eating disorders. Dr. Kaye has been on the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh since 1986 and has a NIMH senior scientist award. His current research is focused on exploring the relationship between brain and behavior using brain imaging and investigating new treatments in anorexia nervosa and bulimia. He is also the principal investigator for an international, multi-site collaboration on the genetics of anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Dr. Kaye has an international reputation in the field of eating disorders and is the author of more than 250 articles and publications.



COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Participants will be able to identify the following concepts and or skills:
  1. An understanding of the etiology and diagnosis of eating disorders
  2. The evidence based treatments for anorexia and bulimia nervosa
  3. Core symptoms and comorbid symptoms of anorexia and bulimia nervosa
  4. Understanding and importance of nutrition and weight gain in anorexia nervosa
